2021 eBay purchase: Razor sharp dressed Putnam

Though it rarely gets me these days, sometimes FOMO is real. I have no problem with the fact that I'll never get to 100% on most of my player collections, so I'll often pass on a rare item when the price is out of my comfort zone. But once in a blue moon I'll see something I just have to have, and fear of missing out kicks in.

Thankfully, with my overall spending down the past few years, I can easily justify splurging here and there. That's exactly what I did when a very interesting item came up on one of my saved eBay searches:

This card is at the intersection of multiple things I like to collect: former UM pitcher Zach Putnam, plates/1-of-1s, and 2008 Razor Letterman. It's a black printing plate from that fantastically fun product, and you really don't see super rare items from it come up for sale very often for whatever reason.

I think by now my reasons for collecting Michigan sports alumni and 1/1s are clear, but since it's been quite a while, here's a recap of my experience with 2008 Razor Letterman. I broke two cases (10 boxes each, five packs per box, one autoed letterman patch per pack) over a pair of group breaks back when you could find them in the neighborhood of $30-$40 per box, an amazing value given some of the names you could pull. Out of 100 cards I never managed to pull a single Putnam, but I bought and traded my way to a pretty nice collection:

The unnumbered nameplate
The /25 nameplate

The "N" and "T" /5

The "M" and "N" 1/1s

And today's Black printing plate to go along with the Yellow plate I already owned

When you see all of those together like that maybe you can understand why I didn't make too much of a fuss over spending a bit more than $20 (around $15 plus tax & shipping) when my butter zone for 1/1s of players that aren't my absolute top priority PCs is more like $8-$15. Passing on something like this would have been totally different than letting someone else overpay for, say, a plate from 2017 Topps. Like Bon Jovi said, I'm halfway there when it comes to this plate set, plus I now have four of the ten 1/1s of Putnam from the product, so I'm almost halfway to that crazy goal.

Who knows if I'll ever find the other two plates, much less any of the other 1/1 letters, but if I do, you can bet your bottom dollar that I'll be trying harder than usual to come out a winner as a bidder or buyer. There's only so much missing out you can live with, you know?
As you can see here, today's card continues to pad my dominant TCDB lead among Putnam collectors, with buddy of the blog Jeff pretty close to at least tying for second. You can see the complete list of those cards here, 35 of which are hits, broken down into
  • 16 autographs
  • 15 autographed manupatches
  • 4 1/1s (two plates and 2 more auto manupatches)
You may be surprised to find out that he's my #2 in the Michigan Baseball hits collection (only about 100 away from Rich Hill!), with Bill Freehan next at 25, J.J. Putz at 22, and Barry Larkin with 21; nobody else has hit the 20-card mark yet.

I actually have another (non-FOMO) plate from eBay on the way, one I spent a bit less on (but would have been ok with losing), and I'll show that off when it arrives. But given the momentum of posting I've built up over the past few days I didn't think it was worth waiting until then. Now I just need to see what I want to scan and post next from my piles of Sportlots cards! I can't promise I'll blog for a fourth straight day but I'll try not to keep those of you interested waiting too long. I wouldn't want you to miss out!

Happy Super Bowl Day!

A quick post with two items:

1.  I finally got around to listing my 2008 Razor Letterman FS/FT on Blowout and on eBay.  Please check them out if you're interested, as I'm open to trading any that aren't on eBay.

2.  Go Packers!  I don't particularly have anything against the Steelers (other than Big Ben being a jackass), but I really, really want to see Charles Woodson finally get his ring, plus I respect the way the Packers got here (and especially the fact that they're Favreless).  Tune in to Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius since Matt will likely have an increasingly excited or dejected LiveBlog going on.

Good luck to everyone's favorite team and even more so to everyone who put any money on the game!

All in all I'm very pleased.  We killed the last case by comparison, pulling another Posey and a Pete Rose this time, plus a 1/1, the first I've ever pulled myself.  I'm also thrilled with how the break went--we had 100% attendance and even a late add in Sam of the Daily Dimwit.  Plenty of trading happened and I think everyone's fairly satisfied again.  In all seriousness I might have to do ANOTHER another one of these!  I actually probably have to since I only pulled one Posey and didn't get BA Benny an Ike Davis of any kind.  By the way, keep your eye out for his own upcoming break real soon.

I pay post what each participant ended up with this weekend or on Monday, but what I have available for sale and trade will go on Blowout and/or eBay again, and I'll make sure everyone gets a crack at something they want.

Razor Letterman group break LIVE @ 3pm EST today

Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot, we're breaking another case today.  Relevant info for those participating/interested:

What we're breaking:  10 boxes (5 packs each) of 2008 Razor Letterman baseball.  One autographed patch card for pack.  Autographs come in variations of unnumbered (50 made), /20, /5 and 1/1.  Letters include one of each of players' last names.  100 players in the set, including Buster Posey, Mike Stanton, Eric Hosmer, Pedro Alvarez, and even Pete Rose.

Since I only got four other participants, we'll open 8 of the boxes for the break and draft from those, and I'll open the other two for myself (cards from the latter two will be up for trade if I feel like it).

Each participant will draft five hits from that pool of boxes.

Participants:
    Schedule:
    • 3:00 pm EST:  randomization of draft order (names go into random.org in order of payment, then my name last.  I'll randomize three times, then as long as my name doesn't end up first, that'll be our draft order).  This will be shown on the Livestream.
    • 3:02:  start ripping packs (Livestream, below)
    • Immediately after that:  card draft (still in LiveStream because I'll be displaying a list of all available cards).  As before, this will be a snaking draft (1-5, then backwards, then forwards, etc.).
    • Immediately after that:  trade-o-rama (CoverItLive, also below)
    Live stream:
(NOTE:  I apologize for the copious ads.  I'll try to get through the packs quicker so you only have to watch a couple as I believe they appear every 15 minutes or so.  Since we're doing trading outside of Livestream it shouldn't be so bad this time)

Please come and watch even if you're not involved--this is a fun set to watch someone break, and you may see something you want to buy/trade for!

    Draft and Trade-o-rama:
(I'll mention this several times, but your comments will not appear until I auto-approve you.  Once we have this going, please leave a comment in the CoverItLive and as soon as I see it I'll auto-approve you and your posts will show up.  Good?  Good.)

We'll do all our trading here to minimize the impact of Livestream ads.  We can all leave the Livestream open if you want in order to keep the card list handy, or I can distribute it in other ways, whatever everyone wants to do.

    Shipping:

As long as everyone's good about communication, I'll be shipping these out on Monday with USPS Priority Mail and Delivery Confirmation.  You're welcome to do any other trading with each other that you wish after the trade-o-rama, but once I've packaged up your cards on Sunday that's what you're getting, so make sure to contact me with any post-TOR trades by tomorrow morning, explaining exactly who should get what.

Too Many Grandersons presents the 2008 Razor Letterman Group Break #2: Letter Patch Auto Boogaloo.

    ON THIS EPISODE:

    IKES FOR MIKE

    OR

    POSEY GALORE

Paypal or GTFO!  You have about 12 hours left to reserve your slot, so don't miss out.  So far I've promised to pull:
    • An Ike Davis 1/1 for BA Benny
    • Poseys for everyone
    • All the Orioles for Beardy
so there's that.  Come get your share or watch me fall flat on my face as I renege on every promise above!

PAYPAL UPDATE:  "You've got money from someone that rhymes with 'Weirdy'" = best Paypal email EVAR.  Thanks, Beardy.

BLOWOUT BREAK UPDATE:  This guy busted a case and pulled THREE 1/1s, but none of them were Ike Davis.

More Blowout mail and group break reminder

Q:  How many Jake Long cards do you need?
A:  all of them.  Or, to paraphrase Tom Brady, "What's your favorite Super Bowl ring?" "The next one."  Yep, I scored a deal I was happy with for this,
a 2008 Leaf Limited Slide Show autograph of Jake Long.  You can debate the merits of piling up hits of OL all you want, I just know that I like collecting the guy.  This goes along nicely with my Manningham of the same set:
and that means I'll probably try to get all the big Wolverines from that set like I am with the others, like the Letterman patch autos.
On a related note, by my count this gives me the following Jake Long stats:
    • 13 total hits
    • 6 autographs
    • 1 auto + "other" (the Slide Show)
    • 3 auto + one or more relics
    • 3 relics
    Not too shabby.

    Group break reminder:
As if you needed one, but since I only have four people who showed interest (one of whom has paid so far) I thought I'd give one more shout out before tomorrow's 11:59 PM EST payment deadline.  Details and stuff here.  Don't miss out--this break is once again entirely autographed patches, like-a so:
This shot reminds me that of the 50 cards from the break, 34 were of the numbered variety (24 #d /20, 10 #d /5), which is pretty ridiculous, especially when you consider some of the UN-numbered cards we got (Posey, Matusz, Castro, et al).  You WILL get your money's worth (and BA Benny WILL get his Ike Davis 1/1!).

Group break case is here, plus more hot Blowout action

This is not the new case--I'm being e-green and recycling the same picture...again...
    Guess what?:
So the group break case arrived today, putting us right on track for the Saturday, 3 pm EST break.  Everybody still needs to pay, and we could definitely use some fresh blood (still plenty of slots open!), but either way, it will be a good time again.  If anything, you should come to see if I come through on my promise to pull an Ike Davis 1/1 for BA Benny (who liked his stuff from the first break, by the way).

A bunch of other people posted breaks on the Blowout forums, and they generally did about as well as we did the first time--dud cases don't seem to be a concern with this product, and I've seen multiple people (besides us the first time) pull multiple Poseys.  Plus, how about a Pete Rose this time?

    Hot player-on-card action:
Some of you probably saw my review of 2010 Bowman Draft baseball blasters this weekend.  Well, as I sometimes do, I posted a smaller version of that on the Blowout break message board, and interest came pouring in for the Machado and Valencia Purples, among others (sorry, Beardy!).  I struck up a nice deal with a guy, trading those two, a couple other inserts from the break, and a Chase Utley bat card I didn't want for 70+ BDPP base cards I needed, plus a nice bonus.  I won't bore you with scans of the base cards, but here's my favorite of this haul:
It's the Wolverines' own Ryan LaMarre, a Reds draft pick and target of my collecting this year--not to be confused with

The trade put me up to something like 84 of the base set and 83 of the Prospects (out of 110 each).  I'll post wantlists soon, but in the meantime I'll just say that I'm happy to have nabbed about 3/4 of the base set mostly by trading, plus I got this guy:
a.k.a. the offer I couldn't refuse.  I'm also making it a goal to work on my Porcello collection this year in the event that he blows up (not literally, that would just be crazy).

The moral of this trade is that sometimes it pays to post box breaks on Blowout's forum because it can lead to mutually beneficial deals.  Oh, one other moral--Beardy has dibs on all of my future Orioles cards, so don't even bother asking for that Brady Anderson III blugenta (a popular color in the future) printing plate autograph White Whale Mirror Blue I'm gonna pull in 2025, and don't act like I didn't give you fair warning.

Razor Letterman case break 2: letter patch auto boogaloo

"How many times is he gonna use this image on his blog?" "At least it's not the WOLVERINES! guy..."
Ok, so I've had enough people show interest that I'm going to do another 2008 Razor Letterman case break.  Atlanta Sports Cards has it again for $299 and Blowout might eventually, so either way I'll get it ordered before next weekend.  Here's the deets:

    • One case, 10 boxes of five, 50 total autograph patches
    • 10 total break slots, including me, so 9 would be available
    • If I don't get at least five other participants, the break will include as many boxes as there are participants plus three, giving us enough variety that some great stuff should be pulled, but making things fair for everyone, including me
    • $35 shipped per slot; payment is due the day before the break (so in this case, Friday the 28th by 11:59 PM).  Please comment or email me for my Paypal address if you need it.
    • Each slot is guaranteed five autographs
    • Distribution of the hits:  we'll bust all the packs, then draft everything one slot at a time, with draft slots randomized.  It will be a snake draft, which means the person who picks last in odd numbered rounds picks first in even numbers.  As last time, I'll randomize several times if necessary should I get the first pick
    • As before, I'd then allow trading at any point before I package the cards for shipping
    • I'll ship the cards as soon as I can once everything's settled, though I'd plan on the following Monday
    • Scheduled break date/time:  Saturday, January 29th at 3:00 pm EST.  This will include a live video stream of the break, followed by the card selection draft, then any trading anyone would like to do (so please consider your availability accordingly).  Please make sure you can at least be around for the card selection, because if not I'll have to select your cards for you, manually or randomly.
    • Please let me know as soon as you can if there's a date/time combo that works better for you and I'll see what we can do.

Update:  got the case ordered today (Friday) so we're good for next Saturday at 3 unless enough people can't make it.

    Confirmed participants:

    Razor Letterman break, part 2?

So I wanna bust another case of these suckers since the first break went so well.  Everybody got stuff they liked (with some outstanding value), I made an extra box part of the break, and I was even able to give away an extra hit to each person since there were only four of us.  That wouldn't be possible with more people this time, but the question remains--if I do another case break, are you interested?  Please vote in the poll to your right.  My thinking is that I'd schedule this break for the last weekend in January, likely the Saturday again, also in the afternoon, since that went so well.  Same conditions (5 hits/slot, drafting after the break, etc.) except I'd want $35/slot instead of $33 to accommodate shipping (plus you've already seen what kind of value you can get here).  I'm ordering another case of these soon one way or another, but if you'd like to take part (with the same caveat that the break would include one box per entrant plus three, unless I get five other participants this time), let me know what you think by voting.  Feel free to leave comments in this post as well.

On a related note, here's what each participant ended up with after drafting and trading:

The verdict:  God DAMN are these worth the $100 I paid.  I feel sorry for anyone who considered joining the break and didn't--the four of us had a ton of great stuff to choose from.  I'm not listing everyone's haul because there's still some trading to be done, but boy am I happy.  Total Beckett value for all the cards:  $1440.  Each participant (other than me) got six cards totaling $150+ in BV for their $33 slot fee (shipped!).  And did you see that Posey #d of 5?  I mean jeez, we got waaaaaaay more numbered cards than I thought we would.  I didn't get my Zach Putnam and we didn't get any 1/1s (including BA Benny's Ike Davis) but obviously I'm extremely pleased with how we did, and very well might get another case, even if it's just for me.  That's pending selling stuff on Blowout/the Bay, but whatever, I've got some nice stuff to put in the PC or get my money back.  GET THIS CASE!

A huge thanks again to Mike, Eric and Derek for participating and making this another success!

Never go full r---- --join my group break now!

So this is here.  Which is good news.  Oddly enough this is actually the second case I've ever had my hands on--I got a rack case of '88 Donruss about 10 or 15 years ago (sooooooo many Ron Gant RCs).  What's even funnier is that the boxes are packed in a case, packed in a box, packed in another Razor box, which was packed in a BlowoutCards shipping box.  If that doesn't bring to mind

then I don't know what does.

On a non-tangential group break-related note, I'm officially moving the break back to Saturday at 3:00 EST in order to at least double my guaranteed viewership (which would be impressive if it didn't mean going from one to two).  That means that the new signup/payment deadline is now Friday evening at 11:59 pm.
Please keep in mind that all are welcome to watch, however.  I'll embed a Livestream player in a post so anybody who wants to can watch as we rip through up to 50 one-card packs, engage in some furious drafting and trading, and then, I don't know, tell ghost stories or something.  Anyway, it should be a good time.
HOWEVER, up to six total slots are still available at the low-ish price of $33 delivered (which, as stated ad nauseum, includes five cards of your drafting choice).  Most of the generally pertinent info can be found here.

A big thanks to Mike of BA Benny's yada yada yada fame for trying to scrounge up additional marks rubes participants in what's sure to be a fun break regardless.

    Razor Letterman case shipped!

The group break Razor Letterman case has shipped from Blowout and is due to arrive on Wednesday, putting us well on track for Friday evening's break.  If you can't make it (Saturday, 3 pm EST) please let me know ASAP and suggest an alternate time, or get me a list of players from the set you'd prefer so I can draft for you (one way or another this break is happening this weekend).  Also, there's still time to get in (the deadline is Friday at 11:59 pm).

'08 Razor Letterman break is officially a go

The case has been ordered and hopefully will get to me by this Friday (I don't have shipping info yet but I'm hoping it ships out tomorrow).  With that in mind, here are the official rules:

    • One case, 10 boxes of five, 50 total autograph patches
    • 10 total break slots, including me, so 9 would be available.
    • If I don't get at least five other participants, the break will include as many boxes as there are participants plus three, giving us enough variety that some great stuff should be pulled, but making things fair for everyone, including me.
    • $33 shipped per slot; payment is due the day before the break (so in this case, Friday by 11:59 PM).
    • Scheduled break date/time:  I'm currently currently planning on the evening of Saturday, the 15th at 3:00 pm EST.  This will include a live video stream of the break, followed by the card selection draft, then any trading anyone would like to do (so please consider your availability accordingly).  Please make sure you can at least be around for the card selection, because if not I'll have to select your cards for you, manually or randomly.
    • That time would hopefully allow UPS enough time to get here late should the case be scheduled to come that day.  Also, I'm hoping it's a time everyone would be able to attend.  Though I'd like everyone to be there to see the break video, it's more important that they be around for the drafting/trading of cards afterward (and I figure I should try to avoid Saturday/Sunday for now due to some exciting NFL games on tap).  There's some uncertainty on this date/time for now because the case hasn't shipped yet, but I'll provide constant updates so everyone knows what's up.  In the meantime, please let me know as soon as you can if there's a date/time combo that works better for you and I'll see what we can do.
    • Confirmed breakers so far:  Derek, BA Benny, Eric L
Bonus stuff:  For being part of this break I'm offering up to two bonuses:
    • Just for being part of the break, you'll get a free entry (per slot you purchase) in my upcoming contest (details to come after this break, but as a hint, think unopened box)
    • If you refer someone, make sure they let me know when they sign up and I'll give you a free hit (not from the break), ideally of your favorite player/team, but I'll do my best to get you something useful
As a reminder, some details about the set can be found in my first break post.

Sound good?  Let's round up some breakers and get to busting!

    New group break requestioning

BlowoutCards has another weekend special on 2008 Razor Letterman cases at $300 even.  I would like to make this a go and get one ordered at that price this weekend.  If I don't get enough interest I'll just bust them myself and see what I want to keep/sell, but my question is, what is everyone's interest based on these parameters?:
    • One case, 10 boxes of five, 50 total autograph patches
    • 10 total break slots, including me, so 9 would be available.  I'm not willing to do the break without a minimum of five other participants so if I didn't meet that interest by the day before the scheduled break, I'd just bust them for myself and make whatever I didn't want to keep available for sale/trade (but likely mostly for sale, to try to make up money on the case)
    • $35 shipped per slot (the cards come packaged in thick magnetic holders so packaging/shipping might add up on me; this is still comparable to the price of one box, although you'd have no idea what you were going to pull)
    • Each slot is guaranteed five autographs
    • My thought on the distribution of the hits:  teams don't seem like a good way to go, so I think we should bust all the packs, then draft everything one slot at a time, with draft slots randomized.  I'd go with a snake draft, which means the person who picks last in odd numbered rounds picks first in even numbers
    • Assuming I'm able to order this weekend, this would tentatively be scheduled for next weekend,(Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening or Saturday or Sunday afternoon) with payment for slots due the day before the scheduled break,  That depends on shipping, but I think they'd make it by Friday
    • As before, I'd then allow trading at any point before I package the cards for shipping.  Since this would likely be a shorter break than last time (albeit with a draft included), I think we could do the break, draft and post-break trade-a-thon all in one shot
So what does everyone think?  With the break set up this way, do I have at least five other interested group breakers?  Please leave a comment if you have any interest or questions about the above.  Please see my previous, initial post about this at this here link for some more details about the set.

Update:  I went ahead and ordered the case just to make sure to get it at that price.  Also, I have one person who's in, so how about the rest of you?

    New group break idea

Now that I'm done complaining about Topps' Million Card Throwaway, let's get down to business.  Though I haven't been in a particular hurry to do a new group break, I've seen a few breaks of another product that has me intrigued enough to at least gauge group interest before I go off and purchase a couple boxes for myself.

That product is 2008 Razor LettermanSports Card Radio did a nice write-up of it a while back, but as usual, the source of my interest was the BlowoutCards box break forums.  That link will take you to a search that includes a good sampling of breaks of different sizes, but the long and short of it is this:
    • The set is comprised entirely of autographed manupatches of prospects
    • Each box contains five packs of one card each (the aforementioned manupatch)
    • Each case includes 10 boxes and costs $300
    • All cards are signed and come in parallels of 20, 5 and 1
    • The SCR link above includes the checklist, but some of the better player hits include:  Brett Wallace, Brian Matusz, Buster Posey, Carlos Santana, Eric Hosmer, Gordon Beckham, Jake Odorizzi, Matt Wieters, Pedro Alvarez and Yonder Alonso
In short, not bad for $300.  We're talking 50 autographed patches here (in magnetic plastic cases), so right now my thinking would be either a 5- or 10-slot break.  I'd also have to work out how to divvy up the cards since I'm not sure if the "team" idea would work or not (ie I'd have to go through the checklist and see which players go with which teams and see if that would be fair; Orioles, anyone?), and I'd mostly like to guarantee that each person would get the same number of autographs (either 5 or 10), because, what's the point of getting in on a break when you could buy your own box(es) and get a guaranteed number of hits?  As with my previous break, I'd allow trading before, during and after the break, up until the point that I actually ship.

I'm guessing by opening a case myself I could make back enough money selling the better hits to at least get close to breaking even, but this seems like a good opportunity for a group break, so I thought I'd again solicit interest from the blogosphere.  So leave me some comments letting me know if you might be interested in breaking a case of these, plus any demands/concerns you have.  With any luck, maybe we can make this my first group break of the new year in a couple weeks.
