More mail, or, Why having a bad memory is nice

BlowoutCards forum trade

So I've taken to posting box breaks on BlowoutCards' forums (not that I've ever bought anything from them before, oddly enough), mainly because it's fun, it doesn't take much effort as I pretty much copy/paste from this here blog, and it enters me in drawings for free stuff.  Plus, it's fun getting props from other collectors on your big pulls.

Anyhoo, I posted the results of my 2010 NCAA Sweet Spot football break and surprisingly had someone interested in all four jersey cards (hit either link to see them in the post, but they're not very exciting).  The guy let me know he had a Henne patch I might like, and I found other copies that looked pretty good, so I bit on that deal, plus I got him to throw in a few more cards, which I preferred to a four-for-one deal.  Here's what I got:

Sick Henne patch (bro)
I've got 99 problems, but too many Brandon Grahams ain't one
All in all, a pretty nice deal.  If you don't frequent those forums, I recommend you hit them up because it's a fun way to enjoy cards vicariously and get your trade on (note:  I in no way endorse buying from Blowout as I've never bought from them, so I don't have experience from which to make a recommendation).

And now, the reason a bad memory is nice:

I sent Larry over at Emerald City Diamond Gems some decent stuff a while ago, and he even blogged about it when they arrived.  Check out the post while I again shower him with praise for representing the maize and blue with this bad boy:
I'm yoinking everyone's images lately...
For my trouble (and lots and lots of Tony Gwynns), I got the following:

-A set of 1989 Topps football:  this is by far my oldest football set and an awesome addition to my collection, featuring a bunch of Hall-of-Famers of whom I didn't have many cards as I didn't collect football at the time.  More Joe Montanas, John Elways and the like now grace my collection, and I couldn't be happier

-A 1996 Pinnacle/Denny's (Lenny's?) Cal Ripken hologram:  I actually had one of these but they're so fun that having two is twice as nice
Hey, that actually scanned pretty decently!
-1990 Score Greg McMurtry rookie:  now there's a card I didn't expect.  Like the Topps set for my set collection, this is probably my oldest UM alum card, and a sweet one of a great player in the old winged helmet.  Awesome!

Another excellent trade package down, and bonus points for receiving it after forgetting I'd even be getting it.  Thanks, Larry!

More to come soon

-Still waiting on those 2010 Sweet Spot Brandon Graham and Minor autographs; when those come you'll see them right away

-Adam of My Cardboard Mistress worked out a deal with me and I can promise I'll at least blog my end of that when those arrive next week.  Bonus points (or cards, if I can find something suitable) to Mr. Mistress for pimping Denard Robinson for Heisman as his beloved Hokies offer no desirable candidates this year.

-I haven't bought any packs/boxes since last weekend, so when the shaking and hallucinations stop, I'll try to find something worthwhile this weekend; the retail stores seem to be in a bit of a dry spell, and I don't really want to push my luck with 2010 Topps Platinum football right now considering I already destroyed the odds on my pull from those blasters:
Just a reminder:  this card is sweet and still available for trade
Until then, why don't you go buy stuff and post about it yourself?  Like I said earlier, that vicarious pack-busting thing is pretty great, especially if you're cheap or broke.

Happy No One Is Going to Read This Blog Wednesday

So in summarizing recent goings-on yesterday, it totally slipped my mind that I did a trade with Jeremy at No One's Going to Read This Blog recently.  He even posted about his end of the deal the other day, so go check that out and prove his title wrong.

As for what I got:

1.  Wantlist cards from a staggering SEVEN different sets, baseball and football
2.  Various Wolverines
3.  Various Tigers, which gives me a great segue into...

ARRRRGH TOO MANY GRANDERSONS
It's been fun piling up some Tigers since I started this blog, and though he's now a former Tiger, people enjoy sending his stuff to me thanks to the blog's name, and I can't say I'm disappointed, I still think the guy's awesome.  On a related note, nice cards of him, plus nothing I already had, so that's a big bonus.

Also of note in terms of baseball stuff he sent:
Wait, who gives a crap about this guy?  ME, since I can finally close the book on this stupid set.  I was getting close to overpaying on shipping for this card on eBay, so NOIGTRTB has impeccable timing.

MOAR
And now the Wolverine goodness, broken into two parts:
Misc. Wolverines, most of which I didn't have
I actually needed these two for sets--2010 SAGE Hit and 2010 Score
To sum up:  wantlist cards from seven sets, Tigers cards I liked and Wolverines cards I liked.  A very enjoyable, well-rounded trade package.  You might even go so far as to call it...the royal sampler....
Thanks, Jeremy!  I'll close with a subtle reminder to read this guy's blog and trade with him if you haven't already.

Happy "I got nuthin'" Tuesday

Greetings fellow bloggers and readers.  I haven't had a chance to buy anything new, and I don't have any trade packages coming in our out that I know of so you get a random mix of stuff.  I do have a trade coming in from the BlowoutCards forums and a couple nice cards from eBay as well, so those will get posted when they arrive.  For now, enjoy the following:

More like Night Wink Martindowl?
Yoink (please don't sue, Night Owl, I'm advertising your blog!)

Night Owl liked the big-ass trade package of Dodgers I sent him, but more importantly he posted it in his ridiculously awesome "What's the best card in the package" format.  I won't ruin the surprise of which card wins, but you might not easily guess which comes out on top.  This is a post that's a ton of fun to read, so reward all the effort Night Owl put into it and check it out (as well as others with that tag).  Night Owl, you're welcome for the cool stuff, and thanks for the WTBCITP honor.

GSNHOF liked his trade package too
Yoink (please don't sue, Tim, I'll send you more Toe Nash cards!)

As previously posted, I finally got around to sending Tim of the Great Sports Name Hall of Fame his trade package, and fortunately he was pretty happy with it.  It's nice that some people appreciate it when you give them unwanted cards of guys with funny names.  Additional major props to him for the awesome Michigan package he sent in return, it was much appreciated.

Yeah, yeah, now getting back to Night Owl...

This is a little late in coming, but I wanted to highlight NO's post about his most-wanted cards, or "Nebulous 9".  He gave credit for the idea elsewhere, but I read it on his blog, so I'm giving him credit.   I decided to do something similar by highlighting the baseball sets from which I needed very few cards as I desperately want to finish those.  You can find that (I call it my "five or fewer club") along the right sidebar beneath by blog links, followers, etc.  Please help, I'll give you stuff in return, maybe even money stuff!

Since everyone else is talking about it

If you're doing Topps' Million Card Giveaway, make sure you get your cards shipped before March 15 next year, or you'll hate the ides more than Julius Caesar (too soon?)Personally, I'm trying to unload the stuff I don't want for a few more that I do before I go through the hassle of paying for shipping, but I'm glad to have been alerted that I would have otherwise lost all of my cards (NOT MY 1987 OZZIE SMITH!!!).  Anyway, that's more incentive for y'all to trade your unwanted Tigers to me.  I still have some 1960s and 70s stuff if you want to deal.

And some other stuff...

2010 Topps Platinum football retail blasters (2)

To celebrate Michigan's 4-0 start this year, I hopped down to the Meijer by me to grab two blasters of 2010 Topps Platinum football to see what all the fuss was about.  I've seen a ton of breaks over at the BlowoutCards forums and seen some cool stuff get pulled.  Have a look at how I did:

Packs/cards:  16 packs / 4 cards (two total blasters)

Mike Kafka Refractor

James Starks Thick Variation

Anthony Dixon Thick Variation
Jordan Shipley odds-buster

Inserts:
  • Thick Rookie Variations:  Anthony Dixon, James Starks (1:6, 2 expected)
  • Refractors:  Mike Kafka (1:27, 0 expected)
Autographs:  Jordan Shipley Refractor/Patch/Autograph #128/500 (1:860, group B)
Relics:  None (none expected)
Best pack:  Let's go with the one with the ridiculous Shipley card, shall we?
Worst pack:  I'll be fair here, nothing was really terrible

Quality control:  9/10 Some of these cards were a bit dinged.  Nothing terrible, just noticeable
Collation:  10/10  No doubles, all inserts guaranteed and THEN SOME
Value:  5/10  A big ding here:  without that Shipley, I would have had some great base cards and a couple inserts, but not a whole lot for my $40.  NOTE:  Out of the two boxes I had three "thick" packs.  Two were the ones that had the variations, which are essentially 1:box, and the other had the Shipley.  So if you buy one of these and pull two "thick" packs, you could theoretically open those and sell the remainder (not that you'd do a thing like that...).  Anyway, a rookie per pack was nice value-wise
Set design and player selection:  8/10  A few things here:  first, I generally like the set design.  These are clearly premium cards and the chrome-like design works, even if it's prone to fingerprints.  I don't love the backs because they only show a year of stats plus career totals.  The design I like best (and wish was used for the base) is the Refractor insert (which only appears to refract around the player's outline, but still looks cool).  All that said, the Rookie patch/autographs are sweet.  Mine had an actual one-color jersey piece, not an actual "patch", but I value the autograph more anyway.  I also don't mind sticker autos as long as they don't look ridiculously out-of-place.  Finally, my one biggest gripe:  this set is a 165 card combination of veterans and this year's rookies, and yet you didn't have room for Brandon Graham, a FIRST ROUND PICK?!
Inserts and extras:  8/10  A big fat MEH to the "thick" rookie variations, but I guess it's better than getting a blank decoy card.  The Refractors look great.  The hits look awesome.  Not much else here to find, though

Overall score:  40/50
Not bad at all, though again, without that hit these boxes don't look as nice.  I'm holding onto the base cards for now in case I want to finish it.  The inserts are for trade, and so is the Shipley (as I mentioned on BlowoutCards, so there may be interest there as well), which I'll trade for a comparable Michigan card

Wolverines?
No extra Wolverines section, I pulled one of the freaking TWO in the box and already scanned it above

Trade with GSNHOF, college football saturday and other stuff

Trade with Tim @ the Great Sports Name Hall of Fame

First up, a shout out to Tim of the Great Sports Name Hall of Fame who, by my reckoning, is the last blogger to whom I owed pretzel money blog advertisment loot.  Tim may do his own post covering what I sent him (HINT:  players with funny names), so I'll give him the chance first, but here's a quick look at what he sent my way:

100% Michigan football, baseball and basketball players! This was a great assortment of Tom Brady, Braylon Edwards, Rich Hill and many more. Thanks, Tim! Hopefully your lot lives up to these lofty standards (and includes enough hilarious names to satisfy you).

Meeeeechigan football
Technically today is usually my blogging day of rest, but Michigan had a noon game, a laugher against Bowling Green State U.  After the last few weeks, this was a nice win (albeit against a baby seal of a school).  As I write this, Notre Dame and Alabama are losing, so today's going pretty well.  I've got the TV muted so I don't have to withstand the ignorance and SEC-fellating of Gary Danielson or the completely biased morons of Notre Dame's Bitch Channel (Tom Hammond is a scary-looking person).

Celebrating the win leads me to my next quick topic:

New box review:

Coming up shortly, a review of two blasters of 2010 Topps Platinum I grabbed at Meijer after the Michigan win.  It's not a ton of packs, so look for that soon.

Finally...

One more shout out for Georgia Mindset's group break.  Get in it to win it like Yzerman, y'all.

Another great MCG trade plus more mail stuff

But first...

Get in on Georgia Mindset's 2010 Topps Chrome/Triple Threads group break.  You wanna see some hits?  Here's some, including a nice hit, all from the Blowout Cards forums:

Another day, another great MCG trade

Brian of Play at the Plate had his eyes on my '73 Topps Pat Corrales (I couldn't imagine why) so we worked out a nice mutually beneficial trade.  I won't steal his thunder as he plans about blogging his end of the deal this weekend.  Here's an overview of what went down and my end, though:
As you can (possibly) see, the main attraction for me was the '73 Topps Horton, a nice older Tiger for my collection, and a 1968 champ to boot.  The other two were throw-ins with funny names, but Brian was nice enough to toss those in to make dealing an unusually popular (I'm guessing due to the nice shot) card a great deal for me.  Here's a better look at the Horton for those interested:
Once again, great deal (and easier to make via email than Topps' system, which I may now dub "Anonymous spiteful pissing match guess time".  Thanks again, Mr. PATP!

Mail call

1.  Contest winner Steve gets his package of 2007 Topps Series 1 gravity packs (and a set of the 2005 Topps Chrome A-Rod throwbacks, because why not?).  Enjoy those, Steve, and if you feel like it, let me know how you do.  You might be able to pull another Jeter SP.

2.  Tim/SpastikMooss of the Great Sports Name HOF finally gets the package I owe him sent his way.  I found a few great sports names, including one of his favorites (God Shamgod) in a '97-'98 Fleer set, and I threw in a couple relics because those are always useful (note to Tim:  I don't think Cliff Floyd has a particularly great sports name, unless you count the fact that he shares a first name with Bill Cosby's best character, and you know, with the hippin' and hoppin' and bippin' and boppin', the kids don't know what the jazz...is all about!

Anyway, I just threw that in in case you can use it for trade bait).  Enjoy those and thanks again!

Great Topps MCG trade and group break reminder

Reminder:  BUY BUY BUY

Georgia Mindset's group break team slots are going fast, so act now!  2010 Topps Chrome and Triple Threads, you know you want them.

This MCG trade offer...DOESN'T suck?!

Peep this, loyal readers:

If it's a little hard to tell, I'm trading my '63 Topps Dom Demeter for a '59 Gus Triandos.  This might very well be the first card I've been offered for the Demeter that isn't A) 1989 Topps B) 1987 Topps C) 1989 Topps or any other unequal junk.  What's not to like with this deal?  I'm gaining four years and something like $3 in value, I've actually heard of Triandos and I could use more 1950s stuff in my collection (ie I might actually get this one, among others, shipped to me, if you can imagine) since the only other one I know of is on the MCG as well, a '58 Topps Don Ferrarese (vintage Topps Don's FTW!).  A close-up:

Bonus Triandos fact:  according to baseball-reference.com, the players he was most similar to when he was 28-31 were two of my favorite former Tigers:  Matt Nokes and Mickey "Greatest Batting Stance In the History of the World" Tettleton.

HT:  the Daily Shiv (apparently defunct)
Anyway I'm sure it's not even in the condition pictured, but still, pretty sweet, definitely the trade I've been waiting for.  Holy crap, enough writing, I'd better accept it before the guy changes his mind!

2007 Topps Football Box

This is the other box I picked up at Sunday's card show, mostly because the thought of getting only one box, with only six packs in it at that, bugged me.  I somehow never went after this box when it originally came out, so I'm making up for lost time.  It's got a nice collection of rookies, including AP and Megatron, and a veritable bonanza of Wolverines so this should be a fun one to break.

Purchased from/price:  card show, $39
Packs/cards:  36 packs / 9 cards
Set size:  440 base cards
Key features: Nothing comes to mind besides the RCs
Key cards:  RCs of Adrian Peterson, Calvin Johnson, Kevin Kolb, Sidney Rice, Brady Quinn, Darrelle Revis, Patrick Willis, and more
Wolverines:  Brian Griese, Tom Brady, Chris Perry, Anthony Thomas, Braylon Edwards, Amani Toomer, Charles Woodson, Cato June, Steve Hutchinson, Alan Branch RC, LaMarr Woodley RC, David Harris RC, Prescott Burgess RC, Leon Hall RC

Sample front
Sample back

Set completion:  287/440 (65%)
Extras:  1 (Carson Palmer)

One of each insert

Inserts:
  • Brett Favre Favre to Favre20:  115 120 129 158 175 186 (1:6, 6 expected)
  • Hobby Masters:   Tom Brady, Michael Vick, Carson Palmer, Larry Johnson (1:9, 4 expected)
  • Running Back Royalty:  LT/Barry Sanders, LT/Emmitt Smith, LT/Jim Brown (1:12, 3 expected)
  • Hall of Fame:  Roger Wehrli, Michael Irvin, Gene Hickerson (1:12, 3 expected)
  • Generation Now:  12 different, including Colston, Big Ben, Vince Young (1:3, 12 expected)
  • Own the Game:  Marvin Harrison, Torry Holt, Terrell Owens, Shawne Merriman (1:9, 4 expected)
  • Copper Parallel:  Larry Johnson AP, Chris Simms, Reggie Bush, Lofa Tatupu, Michael Robinson (1:7, 5 expected)
  • Ring of Honor:  Peyton Manning (1:36, 1 expected)
  • Rookie Fantasy Challenge:  Craig Davis, Lorenzo Booker, Anthony Gonzalez, Sidney Rice, Brandon Jackson, Marshawn Lynch (no odds, I'm guessing they're an extra 1:6 throw-in)
Autographs:  None (none expected)
Relics:  None (none expected)
Best pack:  #9 included Charles Woodson and Steve Hutchinson right off the bat
Worst pack:  #18 included Peyton Manning's stupid face (Ring of Honor insert) after winning the only Super Bowl he'll ever enjoy against an overrated Bears team

Quality control:  6/10  This set is prone to all kinds of flaws like chips and dents and these cards were no exception.  Got all my hits, though
Collation:  6/10  Considering I only got 288 base cards in this box, how the hell did I get a dupe?!  Unacceptable, hence the big ding on the score
Value:  6/10  Mark of the Beast for the first three scores--the packs were cheap but really I got nothing all that great other than a few good RCs (keeping in mind that this box just isn't a great way to get most of a large set)
Set design and player selection:  8/10  I don't love that the cards damage easily, but the front design looks good, and I like the green of the backs.  Otherwise good typical Topps photography and stats on the back
Inserts and extras:  5/10  No "extras" to speak of, and the inserts were pretty meh.  I did like the Hobby Masters, but the Generation Nows are boring and the rest are pretty uninteresting

Overall score:  31/50
"Meh" is pretty much the word for this box.  Having bought it at a card show I didn't get to do my research on it first or I might have realized it wasn't a particularly good box to bust.  I do like the set but (despite my past luck with them) I probably should have gone with a jumbo box to actually give myself a shot at it.  I'll probably just take my time working on this set now as I'll need 150+ cards.  Oh well, at least I pulled a bunch of Wolverines.

Lots in this box, yo

Contest update, GA Mindset group break, trade package

Contest reminder

EDIT:  I guess those hints did it as reader "Steven" nailed all eight:
Rocco Baldelli
Hank Blalock
Alex Cintron
Brent Clevlen
Todd Helton
Andy Pettitte
CC Sabathia
Daryle Ward

Steven, contact me with your address and I'll get those to you posthaste

---------------------

If you hadn't noticed, I'm doing a giveaway contest type deal.   I still don't have the requisite 10+ entries where I'll throw in extra stuff, but you can still get the packs.  So far I've seen just two different guesses that had one correct player, so here's some helpful hints:

-The teams:  White Sox, Yankees, Cubs, Indians, Tigers, Rangers, Rays, Rockies
-The letters:  2 B's, 2 C's, H, P, S, W (last names)
-B and B:  Have shared a team (just not at the same time)
-C and C:  Both hail from the AL Central in this set, though they're not very well-known players
-H and P:  Are with their pictured teams in 2010
-S and W:  Don't share any common teams, but one's a star and one's retired

Combined with that and the series 1 checklist I'm hoping to see a few more correct answers soon.  Put on those thinking caps!

GA Mindset's doing a group break

GOOD NEWS, EVERYONE!

TMG's homeboy GA Mindset is doing a group break:  six boxes of 2010 Topps Chrome and two of 2010 Topps Triple Threads.  Details on his blog, but basically it's $30/team (and $25 for additional teams), plus you get dibs on your team when he does a Bowman Chrome break.  I yoinked the Tigers and Orioles (I'll be damned if I'm gonna miss out on a Ripken bat knob/book/jsy/jsy/auto/pants/sunflower seed because I'm cheap) but it would appear that everything else is currently up for grabs, so get in now!  This is your first reminder, but I'll be pimping this for a few days as I'd like to see it get filled up.

Holy frijoles, that's a nice trade package

Baseball fan of unknown team allegiance Reds and More got some people, including me, to send him some Reds and more Reds for their favorite teams.  I took the Tigers, natch, and I'm pretty happy with my return (sorry the scanner cut everything off today; too lazy to fix):

ARRRRRRGH TIGERS BIP
Now THAT's more like it--Porcello jersey
A few nice Kalines, of which I didn't have many, so I got that going for me
Nice Minis of excellent young Detroit pitchers
"Wahoo Sam" Crawford, named after his hometown in Nebraska, named after the guy who was called that because he actually thought living in Nebraska sounded swell
Gator!  Detroit's resident pinch-hitting hero (and a pretty nice guy when I snagged his autograph a few years back)
And lots and lots of other Tigers from the 1970s(!)-2010.  This trade package easily earns an A from me, thanks, Reds and more...!

New trade package, contest reminder, new box

Contest reminder

I'm giving away some packs.  Free.  How much are these free packs?  They're free.  And in what form do they come in?  They're packs.  Uh-huh, and how much do they cost?....  Get in the game, right now your only entrant is mmmrhubarb of é rayhahn, rayhahn.  If y'all want to let him win by default, fine by me, even if he has exactly zero correct so far.
EDIT 1:  SpastikMoose is now in, we've got ourselves a game...
EDIT 2:  Just to be clear, my hints about teams represented apply to the teams on which the players would be pictured in 2007, not necessarily in 2010

Sweet trade package

Gracing my mailbox today was a nice trade package from The Daily Dimwit, who took some Astros from back in the day when they didn't suck and sent me some great retired players (Griffey, Ripken and Maddux) and the best players from a team that kind of sucks (Verlander, Scherzer and Miggy Cabrera).  Highlights:

2010 Topps Hank Greenberg Commemorative ManuPatch  a spiffy looking patch highlighting the Tigs' first World Series title (not to mention one of its greatest players ever)

2008 Upper Deck X Justin Verlander Jersey  a nice start to my JV memorabilia collection (I have a 2005 Topps Chrome RC/Auto, the highlight of my JV stuff right now).  Seriously, this guy is good, get his stuff before the Tigers get a clue and he starts ripping off 20 win seasons

2010 A&G Max Scherzer Autograph:  since Max ended up with the Tigs in a steal of a deal over the winter (and got his head/mechanics straight in the minors) he's been pretty ridiculous, so I'm officially on his bandwagon.  On a side note, I'm not on the A&G bandwagon, but having others buy them and send me cards works juuuuuust fine

2010 Topps Cal Ripken History of the Game  huh, wonder what game this is from?  Happy 15th anniversary plus two weeks of 2131, Iron Man

2009 Goodwin Champions Ripken Mini  I think I have maybe one other mini Ripken, and anyway this one features a great portrait.  Excellent card

2010 Topps CashGrab for CrapPacks Not Ruth or Strasburg Refractor  probably from a searched value pack, no less.  Seriously, I've been jonesing for this card for a while, but I figured I'd get offered one before long, and I was right.  I do like the looks of the card, and of course a scan doesn't do justice to its refractorness

The Ripkens, Griffeys, Madduxes and Tigers that round out the package are also great, but that's enough scanning for now.  Excellent trade package, Dimwit!  I hope we can do business again soon.
As a reminder, if you'd like to trade with TMG, drop me a line by hitting the link to your above right.

Another box

As promised, look for my 2007 Topps Football hobby box soon, either tonight or tomorrow
