2022 trade package #25: Sport Card Collectors

Christmas cards are coming! Both incoming and outgoing, as it turns out. I'll have more details on the outgoing items when I have a bit more clarity on my COMC and Sportlots shipping situations, but the good news is that there will be a Too Many Verlanders Christmas Cards 2022, which means lots of you will be getting presents from me!

As for items going the other direction, I have lots to show off thanks to multiple blogger trades, eBay purchases, TCDB deals, last weekend's show, plus the aforementioned Sportlots and COMC buys.

Today's trade package is a terrific combo of "stuff I set aside for you", Christmas cards, and a giveaway, all from Matt of Sport Card Collectors. My not-so-secret Santa let me know to expect a rare bubble mailer from him and that's exactly what I got just before the calendar flipped over to December. This thing was absolutely stuffed with goodies, so here's a quick rundown on what he included:
A big stack of current and past Tigers dominated most of the envelope. Baez (a very quality Museum base) and the returning Boyd (shout out to John!) are the current guys here. The team very recently cut bait with Candy, who had a good amount of potential but was trending in the wrong direction for what he'd cost. Washington signed him and I'm interested in seeing how he does. I can't say no to a Prizm Refractor and numbered Donruss parallel! Cobb looks great on his Gallery card as well.
Check out the killer G's to start this scan! I love the Grandy '07 Chrome Refractor which was new to me, as was Hammerin' Hank's Diamond Kings Artist Proof (and Kuenn's too!). Infante was a quality middle infielder for some of the Tigers' more successful teams in the 2000s and 2010s. Kaline is always, and I mean always welcome in envelopes heading my way! As is young pitcher Matt Manning, for whom you see two items here before another one that somehow got lumped into the next scan. V-Mart had some big moments before his bat waned late in his career.
Mazara has discoed off to other teams that aren't Detroit and that's fine by me. I wonder if Meadows will be healthy enough to appear in 100 games this year? Looks like one of Manning's cards got grouped in with fellow injured and talented Detroit P Casey Mize on some nice looking cardboard. Morris makes as much sense as anyone on an insert throwing it back to the '87 set. Nathan was a Tiger for all of 63 games over two seasons--almost entirely a nice 2014 campaign--but that was long enough to get on a team-appropriate Chrome Orange Refractor.
A few of these guys are active but only the guy in the middle--Tork--is currently with the team as they're hopefully cutting out the dead weight to bring in some quality players to pair with the youngsters. I appreciate the card of Spencer since I don't have many yet, and I still have high hopes that he'll adjust to the bigs after a rough 2022. Norris and new White Sox OF Victor Reyes look good in Topps' Royal Blue parallel here too.
Here's the rest of the baseball stuff, starting with a six-pack of A&G Minis. Bunning and Morris are HOF pitchers that began their careers with Detroit so it's fun to see them here together. Each appears on two different versions as you can tell by these backs:
The Topps Heritage Minors auto of former OF prospect (who retired due to injury) Brock Deatherage was a fun surprise! It's numbered /100 and the guy had one of the most metal names in the minors. Just don't look at his social media if you don't want to further lower your opinion of the education level of pro athletes. I love the autograph, though!

And to finish off the sport, why not include a wax pack of '88 Donruss? I haven't decided what to do with this yet but at least for now I'm keeping it sealed.
And now we get to the football content, much of which is made up of my giveaway winnings. The RC/rookie-related cards of Collins and disruptive Detroit Lion Aidan Hutchinson are much appreciated, especially the latter as I work on building a collection of this year's #2 overall pick who's been a "bust" to Spartan and Buckeye fans only.

But I'm most excited about the autographs of Hutchinson and his fellow 2021 partner in crime off the edge, David Ojabo. Hutch's auto came from 2022 Prestige and features a nice shot of him on draft night when his home state team took him #2 overall. He's been worthy of the pick ever since overall, even with a few quiet games. While his signature leaves something to be desired, that's nothing new for athletes these days!

Ojabo's card is terrific as well. He thrived on the other side of the defense that Hutch played, coming up with huge moments himself. The Nigerian-born defensive stud moved with his family to Scotland when he was young, and rewarded Michigan's interest in him with 11 sacks in his one season as a starter, the last of which led to the iconic "O-ja-BO!" call by Gus Johnson in the Wolverines' romp over Ohio State. An ill-timed injury after the season hurt his draft stock but he was still selected in the second round by coach Jim Harbaugh's brother's team, the Ravens. I love having my first autograph of the future defensive star be a Michigan uni card from a Panini Origins autograph set available in this year's Chronicles product.

One last card in this image was a total surprise for me: a Chris Evans 1/1 proof card from 2021 Leaf Metal Draft. It's a Crystal Blue version of the State Pride insert, which ends up being the perfect color for a Michigan guy like the current Bengals RB/WR/KR. Part of the design obscures Michigan's state motto, "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice" ("If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you") because that's where the autograph would go. The current incarnation of Leaf has been pretty shady, but these state flag cards still look amazing. I'll happily add this as my first hit of Evans, an out-of-the-blue (pun intended!) Michigan uni 1/1 in a very generous trade package!
Here's the back of the proof card for completeness, and because it's fun to stare at.

The three new players here bump the unique subject total count of my UM football collection to 236, and the overall count is a minor milestone of 1600!
We're not quite done just yet because the giveaway included a few other cards courtesy of Panini. Three are from Panini Chronicles like the Ojabo above. The Chubb, numbered /49, is a Purple parallel from the Donruss Retro insert. Goodson's auto is a Contenders College Ticket Autographs Red version. Hall's signature is from the Donruss Rated Rookie Autographs insert. And finally, the parallel of Fant was inserted into 2022 Prestige packs and is an Xtra Points Premium Gold version numbered /99. Many thanks again to Panini and to Matt for giving these away. I've since put them up for trade on TCDB but will happily offer them here as well to those interested in working out a trade.

Matt, thanks so much again for this ridiculously stacked envelope. I'm grateful to be one of the folks you trade with and I appreciate your holiday season generosity here. I can also promise you'll be quite happy with your return envelope once everything I ordered gets shipped my way, so you should look forward to a merry Christmas yourself!

Stay tuned for more great Christmas cards coming soon.

Big fun announcement: streaming a pack break with a contest!

So here's a few things I haven't done in a while that I'll be doing all at once:  busting retail packs, streaming, and hosting a contest.  Here's what's up:  I've been following a thread on Blowout about a deal Wal-Mart's offering online only, 50 packs for $20 (free shipping if you spend $35+).  That's $0.40 per pack, friends.
The packs you get seem to vary a ton, with some people complaining about low-end, junky stuff, and others getting some nicer more recent packs.  There seems to be a mix of dollar store packs (what's up, Doug?), repacks/blisters, and other random stuff.

Check out that thread to get a better idea of what's coming in these, though I swiped an image for reference:
So what does that have to do with me and you, readers?  Well, I'll tell you!

I've decided to try a few of these for myself, so I ordered four (200 packs worth!) and will be streaming ripping them live when they arrive next week (due on Tuesday, for now).  I'm sure most of what comes out of them will be heading to trade packages, so that should be exciting for many of you aside from just seeing someone open a ton of packs.

BUT, even more exciting...
I bought a FIFTH package of these just for contest purposes, and I'll be straight up giving it away during the stream!  All US residents who are following this here blog will be eligible and I'll random it off at the end of the stream to one lucky viewer.

Sound good?  I hope so!  I'm tentatively planning on doing this at 9pm this coming Tuesday and will try to lock that down when I can confirm.  In the meantime, will interested folks please drop a comment letting me know if that date/time works?  I'd love to get as many people involved as possible.  Tell me what you think!

Stupidly easy contest over at Bob Walk the Plank!

Hey y'all!  Get on over to Bob Walk the Plank right now to join Matt's contest.  It's stupidly easy to enter--just leave a comment and say what you collect.  Don't be that guy--you know, the one that doesn't follow instructions.

You have until 9:00 p.m. this Friday to get in, and the more people that join the better the prizes will be, plus if he gets more than 50 entrants there will be THREE winners!

I think this is exciting enough to warrant Matthew Lesko:
Good luck to everyone who enters, and by "everyone who enters" I obviously mean "me," because screw you guys, I'ma win this!

Time to pimp a contest that's not my own!

Expect one last contest update soon; I'm awaiting addresses and prize picks from Max at Starting 9 and Josh Liss.

Now, onto cooler things:

Happy one-year anniversary to Gavin over at Baseball Card Breakdown!  He's celebrating that milestone with a pretty sweet contest, if you hadn't heard.  Grab a few entries by:

  • Commenting on that post
  • Pimping the contest
  • Referring people to the contest
  • Sending him stuff he needs
for up to seven total entries!  Curtis is also shooting for 100+ followers, which he clearly deserves, though that's not a requirement.  What can you win, you ask?  Try one of the following sweet-ass auto lots:
If you haven't already, follow Gavin's blog, then enter this great contest!

Ok, here's the deal:  I'm gonna take the list above, paste it into random.org, then randomize it 11 times, because
THIS CONTEST GOES TO 11
You know, if I hadn't mentioned that.

So 11 randomizings, and then the first 11 unique names that come up are our winners!
A quick note:  though it says "You have randomized this list 10 times" at the very bottom, I did indeed randomize it 11 times; you have two randomize three times for it to consider it "twice" and so on.

Congratulations to our big winners!:
  1. Brian (Play at the Plate)
  2. Kyle Wong
  3. Tony (Off Hiatus Baseball)
  4. Greg (PTSiA)
  5. Eric Eckstein
  6. Max (Starting 9)

  8. Alex (Chavez Ravining)
  9. Tim (Great Sports Name Hall of Fame)
  10. Josh Liss
  11. Swing and a Popup
Brian gets dibs on whatever he wants (though I'll hazard a guess at his #1 choice).  Everyone else on the list, please shoot me an email (caljr3000 at gmail) or leave a comment with your choices ranked in the order you'd want them most, from 1-11.  As a reminder, all prizes can be seen here.  Canadian winners, depending on how things fall I'll contact you directly to make other arrangements, but for now please send me your lists too.

For those of you who didn't win, rest assured that I've found some other extras to throw in as consolation prizes.  And by the way, I still need addresses from the following:
  • Al Kawamoto (Hockey Kazi)
  • Chris (Nachos Grande)
  • Chuck Bartz
  • Josh Liss
  • Max (Starting 9)
  • Triple Play Autos

And thank you again to everyone who participated.  Once I have all the addresses and sufficient packing materials (I may require a quick order over at BCW, we'll see), I'll get what you claimed/won out to you!

And now I'm headed downtown for a fun concert featuring one of my favorite bands growing up:  Cake!  (Hence the title, if you hadn't figured that out).

Spring cleaning giveaway/contest final update

Here's what I'll be doing this week...
Hi everybody!

To say that this giveaway exceeded my wildest expectations would be an understatement.  Not only was I able to end it more than a week early, but also every single lot was claimed!  The amount of space this has opened up for my card closet is priceless (other than, uh, shipping), and I'm much happier getting those lots into the hands of collectors that want them instead of unceremoniously dumping them by other means.

So, how about an informative update, bullet-style?:

  • Most importantly, I need addresses from quite a few of you.  If you're on this list, please send them soon so I can get your stuff packaged this week:  Al Kawamoto (Hockey Kazi), Alex (Chavez Ravining), Chris (Nachos Grande), Chris (Raz Card Blog), Chuck Bartz, defgav (Baseball Card Breakdown), Jack (Baseball Dad), Josh Liss, Kyle Wong, Mark (Baseball Nation), Max (Starting 9), Tony (Off Hiatus Baseball), Triple Play Autos.  You should have my email from my responses to your entries, but if not, it's CalJr3000 at gmail.
  • We have a total of 25 entrants and 117 entries
  • The randomization will be sometime tomorrow afternoon (up in the air due to Father's Day festivities).  I'll put up a post so everyone knows what's going on, then I'll have the winners choose what they want draft-style
  • Canadian entrants:  as I mentioned, some of the prizes are a bit too large to cost-effectively ship them north of the border.  We'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it, but I have a couple contingencies for you just in case, so don't worry
And most of all,

Giveaway/contest update

Here's a quick update on the proceedings for those of you interested:

Remaining lots available (contest entries per lot):
  • NFL:
    • Arizona Cardinals (3)
    • Atlanta Falcons (2)
    • Baltimore Ravens (2)
    • Carolina Panthers (1)
    • Chicago Bears (1)
    • "Wisconsin/Minnesota":  Green Bay Packers/Minnesota Vikings (1)
    • "State of Pennsylvania":  Philadelphia Eagles/Pittsburgh Steelers (1)
    • "All College Unis":  what the title says (2)
  • NBA
    • 2000-2001 Topps complete set (minus rookies) (2)
I'm thrilled by the fact that this is all that's left!  As a matter of fact, if I can get that Cardinals lot gone by this weekend, I'll go ahead and bump up the cutoff date to this Sunday so I can run the prize randomization a week early and then get down to packaging and shipping.  If you see anything in this list you'd like, please make sure to comment on the original post per my rules.

So claim or get someone else to claim the Arizona Cardinals and we'll finally unlock the Tulowitzki autograph as the grand prize!

Speaking of the contest portion, we just hit our 100th total entry today, with 23 total entrants to-date.  It's not to late to augment your entries by pimping the contest if you haven't already, plus, of course, you could help your chances by grabbing one or more of the above lots.  "Girthy" Greg Z. is our overall leader in chances with 12 right now, by the way.  Good luck, everybody!

Edit:  in one fell swoop, Chris of the Raz Card Blog has not only taken over the lead in entries with 13 (sorry, Zakwin) but also picked up the last of the 10 lots I made prerequisites for making the Tulo auto available.  Thanks again to those of you that chose those, making this contest a lot more interesting for everyone!  I'm now declaring the giveaway/contest at an end at 11:59 p.m. EST this Saturday, the 14th, with the drawing taking place Sunday and shipping following shortly thereafter.

Pic unrelated, but awesome (from CBSSports)

2014 Spring Cleaning Giveaway/Contest!

Why?  Because crazy fun free giveaway contests automatically mean Matthew Lesko, that's why!
The what:
As if I haven't been teasing this for a while.  I'm giving away lots of cards, then giving away MORE in the form of a contest to make sure people take cards away from me.

The why:
1.  To clear space
2.  To get cards into the hands of people that want them
3.  Seriously, I have a lot of stuff I don't really want, and it's not like space grows on trees.  Cards sort of do, though, when you really think about it.
4.  To spur a bit more trading, since I don't really have much in the way of trade bait anymore.
5.  It's fun!

The rules:
I'm trying to keep this as simple and fair as possible, but I still have a few guidelines:

1.  Each of these lots is absolutely free.  I'm hoping it'll get some of you trading with me (if you aren't already), but there's zero obligation here.
2.  All claims for lots should be made in the comments of this post only.  That assures that everyone can see who's claiming what and solves any issues of who claimed what first.
3.  Also, I won't allow any anonymous comments; either post with an account that's linked to your email, or provide your email address, even if you just say "myemail at gmail" or something.  I don't want to have to track down "noreply-comment@blogger.com" 20 times!
4.  Claim as many lots as you want, but don't be a dick and claim them all!
5.  Because of shipping costs, I reserve the right to deny claims for larger lots (or prizes) to participants outside of the country (including Canada).  A medium-sized bubble mailer is fine, I just don't want to pay like $50 to send something larger than that (sorry!).
6.  Each lot has an assigned number of contest entries based on how much I want to get rid of it, but I'll try to make things as fair as possible.  Just look for the number inside parentheses after the lot title/description.
7.  An additional contest entry per person can be had by pimping the giveaway/contest on your blog.  Please just comment anytime with a link to prove it.  As you'll see, the more people we get involved, the better it will get for everyone!
8.  What I consider the top prize, the Tulo auto, will only become available if all of my highest-priority lots I want to get rid of get claimed.  Those will be denoted in red/bold, and, as I've said, will also earn you the most entries.  There are 10 of these.
9.  I'm going to run this contest for up to two weeks, from Sunday, 6/8 to Sunday, 6/22 at 11:59 p.m. EST, or until everything is claimed, whichever comes first.
10.  I will then take every one of the entries, randomize them, and then the top 11 different participants will get to choose among the prizes (below) draft-style.  I'll also try to throw in something extra (small insert sets or other things) for everyone else who participates while supplies and space last.
11.  In the interest of transparency, I'm posting a Google Drive spreadsheet of the entries for all to see at the very bottom of this post.
12.  Once the lots and prizes are claimed at the end of the giveaway/contest, I'll ship everything out.

I'll keep this post updated so everyone knows who's claimed what.  Again, please comment on this post only--don't pick another one or email me directly!

The prizes:
Troy Tulowitzki auto

2008 UD baseball Series 1&2 jumbo pack blaster (five packs/36 cards)

2014 UD football value pack
2013 Panini Triple Play baseball value pack

The lots:
As you'll see, there's a lot of variety here.  Please feel free to ask more about the lots, though I'm not going to list specifics for every group.  The team/player lots are generally a mix of base/inserts, and there's definitely some doubles (and up) in there.  The sizes of the lots varies, and I tried to give a bit of a sense of scale in the images below.
