A trip around my blogroll, November edition

I've got nothing I feel like blogging about for now, but I did feel like highlighting some of my favorite posts so far this week:
A Pack to be Named Later busted a pack of 2000 Fleer Tradition football, which is a pretty great set in my opinion, and I don't think I've seen those opened online before.

ARPSmith's Sportscard Obsession showed off a pair of beautiful mid-90s Matt Williams Donruss Elite inserts.  As a kid who collected during that era, seeing these brings back fond memories, even if I didn't pull one until YEARS later because they were so rare at the time.

Paul from Card Boarded highlights the awesome paint job on Red Wing goalie Jimmy Howard's mask.  Nice combination of the Spirit of Detroit statue and the Olde English "D," Jimmy!

Johnny from Cards From the Quarry is back at it with his awesome Quarry Unlimited custom set, 2013 edition.  Today's post features the multiplayer rookies design (my favorite), but don't miss his other posts in the series!

CynicalBuddha of Collector's Crack scored some cheap but awesome boxed sets from a card shop warehouse sale.  There's some pretty sweet stuff to see, and oh, hey, one of them has Jim Abbott on top, so let's use that image!

Brian at Play at the Plate has a mother competing with his mother-in-law to see who can buy him more blasters.  Remind me how I can marry into that family.  Also, he pulled a Verlander, so thumbs up!

And finally, the best post from this week (which happens to be last alphabetically in my reader):

News and notes, plus an All-Star trip through the blog roll

I've been less active the last few days due to a busy weekend and an illness that knocked me on my ass.  However, I did want to cover a few things today, then take a quick run through my blog roll to highlight some of the cooler stuff I've seen in reading my favorite blogs.

First up, my COMC package arrived yesterday, a day early!  That includes some trade bait for a few of you, and I'll be sending a bunch of packages and PWEs out sometime this week/weekend.  Plus you'll have some cool stuff to check out over on TMM.

Also, SportLots packages continue to roll in, which has been fun.  I've got more "You Complete Me" posts to write up, and again, some pickups will be highlighted on TMM.

Finally, of course, tonight is the All-Star game!  I'm pulling for the AL, of course, due to six Tigers making the team.  Here's five of them (Verlander was warming up to start the game) in a picture taken on Sunday--the game I attended:
From MotorCityBengals.com
Ok, now let's do something I haven't done in a while and highlight cool/interesting stuff from the blogs I read every day!

That's it for today, so enjoy your favorite blogs while you hopefully get to see some of your favorite players take the field tonight.  Remember:  this time it counts.

Tigers All-Stars and a quick round-up

2011 All-Star game, now with 100% more Tigers!
The AL and NL rosters have been announced, and this year's game will feature a bevy of current and former Tigers.  I realize you could possibly say that about your favorite team, but this here is my blog, so this is what you're getting today.

AL C (STARTER), Alex Avila:  This is the selection I'm happiest about for many reasons.  The first is that I love that he was voted in as a starter, which really says something about how special his season has been.  Second is that, as young as he is, you know he'll enjoy the experience, hopefully the first of many appearances.  Thirdly, he actually makes the most sense here--while voters predictably went full retard for Derek Jeter over the more-deserving Jhonny Peralta, they at least realized Alex was putting up numbers second only to object of dayf's bromance Brian McCann (who is, to be fair, awesome), and second to none in the AL.  The next best choice would have been Carlos Santana (or, I guess, Matt Wieters, who's in as a reserve).  Finally, this totally vindicates my vitriol toward the stubbornly stupid Jim Leyland, who remained loyal to out machine and all-around life force vacuum Gerald Laird the last couple years, proudly watching him lead the team to another .500 finish (barely) in 2010.  Alex is the real deal and I'm happy that he's shutting up all the haters who assumed the Tigers took him because of his dad's connection to the team.

AL 1B (reserve) Miguel Cabrera:  I won't say as much about this choice because it's so blindingly obvious (though I do feel bad about Paul Konerko, who I hope wins the extra man balloting).  Nope, Cabby's numbers speak for themselves, and he's yet to get in alcohol-related trouble this season, which is a hopeful sign.

AL OF (STARTER), Curtis Granderson (Yankees):  Yep, Curtis is gone, but his production sure isn't.  While I hate hate HATE that it's for the evil incarnate Yankees, I'm genuinely happy for him that his enjoying such a stellar season.  He may be a Yankee, but he's easily deserving of the honor of starting that game, and the way this year's gone for him, I wouldn't be surprised if he made a big impact in the game.

AL OF (reserve) Matt Joyce (Rays):  At the time he was traded to Tampa for Edwin Jackson, the reviews were mixed.  Then they were almost universally positive for Detroit because Jackson had a decent season and then turned into Austin Jackson, Max Scherzer et al.  Now things are looking a little more even thanks to the fact that this guy is putting up some nice numbers for the Rays.  Generally I wouldn't say that the Tigers are missing his production in the outfield relative to what we ended up with after the two trades, so I'm happy he ended up in a situation where he could thrive--oddly enough, as a partial replacement for Carl Crawford.

AL RP Jose Valverde:  This ESPN jackass doesn't like Papa Grande's "mediocre numbers for a closer" (such as 35 Ks in 36 innings and zero blown saves) because he assumes Valverde is the reason CC Sabathia got left off (I bet they just didn't want to pay for three seats to fit his ass on the plane).  ESPN's trademark Yankee homerism aside, Valverde is a great choice due to both his numbers and flamboyant attitude, which should play well on a big stage such as the All-Star game.  Hell, the shot on the above card isn't even from a game--that's Jose walking home across a suburban baseball diamond.

AL SP Justin Verlander:  JV won't get to pitch in the game due to the timing of Detroit's rotation, but if he did I'm sure he'd be the starter.  He's put up better numbers than Cheeseburger Chaser Sabathia while on a much, much worse team.  In fact, I might start referring to Verlander as "Ground Floor" because he's almost literally the only thing between the Tigers and the cellar right now the way the rest of the rotation has been pitching lately.  Anyway, hopefully he shows up to the game to get a nice ovation for his no-no earlier this season.

NL SP Jair Jurrjens (Braves):  John Smoltz Jr. (well, at least the guy we got swindled out of wasn't from the state of Michigan this time) is looking healthy and putting up some excellent numbers.  Interesting stat:  104.2 is both the number of innings he's pitched this season and my body temperature whenever I ponder why we sent him to the Braves in a deal for the AL pitching-phobic Edgar Renteria.  Still, he's a former Tiger that fortunately went to a team that appreciates his talent, and I wish him well.

NL 3B (STARTER) Placido Polanco (Phillies):  Here's another guy the Tigers let go that I'm not very happy about.  All Polanco (and his extremely enormous head) did during his stint with the Tigers was hit, especially in big spots.  Considering the dearth of quality at the 2B position since, (not including the too-quickly-given-up-upon Scott Sizemore) giving him up was just inexcusable.  In any event, Polano earned this selection, his second, and I'm happy for him (and his extremely enormous head).

SS Jhonny Peralta, as I mentioned, was a pretty obvious snub, but C Victor Martinez is on the short list for the last man in spot (which, again, I think should go to Paul Konerko).  Not a bad group of current and former Tigers, eh?

Quick roundup:
I haven't done one of these in a while, but there were a few things I wanted to highlight, some for selfish reasons and others because I just thought they deserved it:

I hope everybody has a great weekend and 4th of July!  (Suck it, England)

Sunday catching up, February edition

First, the main point of today's post:

Eric from Manupatches and Chrome Scratches got a trade going with me recently after the pair of Razor breaks because he was continuing his quest to spell different names with those letters.  I currently owe him some stuff (going out soon, I promise!), but in return here's what he sent my way in a package that arrived yesterday:
The highlight of the package for me, a dual jersey of Super Mario from 2010 Sweet Spot football.  This is a great shot of The New Math in a Michigan uni and I like the fact that the two jersey pieces look different.  Eric's cool because he grabbed this for me at his LCS in anticipation of a trade, so I'm glad that worked out for both of us.

Next was a Pablo Sandoval 2010 Topps 206 mini autograph.  I pulled this from his trade bait to be trade bait for myself as much as anything, but if I don't ever move it I'll be happy to have a cool sig of Kung Fu Panda: overweight World Series-winner edition.

Next was a couple Tigers (former, current and legendary).  Someday I'll get back into acquiring as many Gibsons as I can, and maybe even get that collection scanned and uploaded like the rest of my stuff.

Finally, a good chunk of what would likely be a Wolverines team set from 2006 Topps, highlighted by a Gold Cato June, a couple Tom Bradys and a Jason Avant RC.  MOAR WOLVERINES!

In conclusion, a great trade package as usual from Eric, who is a TMG-recommended trader.  Please show your appreciation by sending him Royals, Rockies, letter patches and hilarious mustaches.

Let's see, what else?...
More to come when I have time--I'm still trying to catch up on some trade packages, better organizing my collection (including a lot of scanning/tagging/uploading), set wantlists and other stuff, plus I'm doing a lot of work on my house.  But I've got plenty more fun stuff in the works, so stay tuned.

A trip through the old blogroll

Updates on some goings-on around the blogs I follow, including some stuff that very much so deserves your attention too:

Great contest:  Charles of Hoopography fame is having a very cool contest that only subtly promotes his site (I keed, I keed).  Seriously, it's a real nice tie-in and y'all should check it out for a chance to win some cool free Donruss stuff.  The challenge:  guess his #1 favorite card from his Top 25 (which has been a great series; personally I think the quad auto with Desmond Howard should be #1).  Yours truly won't be participating--I don't want to divert those cards from going to someone who deserves them (ie gives a lick about basketball).  Do yourself a favor and follow Hoopography anyway, it's a great read.
Saying "yoink" equals a citation, right?
New blog:  Check out Johnny's new Rockies-centric blog Cards from the Quarry and get an eyeful of some ugly-ass uniforms!
Maybe if "yoink" was in the MLA handbook...

I can be as stupid and poor as yoooooou!:  BA Benny ripped some NASCAR packs and posted the best one.  Spoiler:  he pulls a dual race-used card from when some guy DROVE REAL FAST AND THEN TURNED TO THE LEFT (best South Park ever).
Yoink, y'all
HOF FTW:  dayf over at Cardboard Junkie's got a pair of sick vintage league leader-type cards.  Holy crap does that second one feature a dream outfield.

[ed:  at this point I thought I'd stolen enough pictures; the first two are kind of useful, but the third just starts to get gratuitous.  Enjoy the rest of the post sans pictures]

Why is he posting more Grandersons than I am?:  Night Owl's got a scan of a Granderson, among others, in a cool technical discussion of card photography.  I just think the pictures are purdy.

Warp zone:  Crinkly Wrappers wants to know why Topps' chrome cards from packs are warped but the redemptions aren't.  Yeah, WTF, Topps?

Legendary Cuts or KITJ?:  Beardy busted a box of 2009 UD Legendary Cuts.  How did he do?  Spoiler:  next time take the KITJ, son, it offers more value.

There's a card of a microwave, your argument is invalid:  Phungo honors the worst pull of the year.

Group break (not mine edition):  Thorzul's breaking '07 Topps Chrome, '05 Topps Pristine and 2010 Famous Fabrics, which is pretty cool.

BA Benny = Patches O'Houlihan:  Nice trade post between BA Benny and Derek of Tomahawk Chopping.  Both guys are awesome, and I'm not just saying that because both have been part of both of my group breaks so far--make sure to deal with both, you'll be glad you did.

Xmas box busting:  My Cardboard Mistress got some nice baseball card swag for Christmas.  Check out part 1 and part 2 of his box of 2009 UD Piece of History, with more boxes to come whenever he gets around to it.

Wait, something GOOD came out of the MCG?:  This was a few days ago, but Play at the Plate completed his MCG-a-thon and came out with two excellent cards, bringing his contest to an end.  Check out the results here.

More busting:  Colbey/Flywheels of Cardboard Collections busted a bunch of stuff for a group break.  There's more posts than I feel like linking to right now, so just go to his blog and check them out for some vicarious fun.

Wasting words on lowercases and capitals

Mostly uppercases, actually

(Great song to go along with this post)

So the cool news of the day is that I got another Michigan letter patch/auto from eBay in the mail today.  This makes #2, but I have a third coming, which you'll likely see this week (crazy that I'm able to find them this often all of a sudden).  Here's patch the second:
Not bad, eh?  This bad boy is signed by former Michigan WR Adrian Arrington.  You might remember him from such highlights as these, against 2007-2008 Florida featuring Football Jesus:

That's great and all, but I'm just excited to have another one of these letter patch/autos featuring the ridiculous 2008 Michigan draft class.  So far that's Henne and Arrington, so anybody care to guess who I picked up next?

Also coming in a future post (ie, whenever it arrives), another sweet Michigan hit featuring MULTIPLE players...

Georgia Mindset still wants to break stuff:
2010 Bowman Chrome group break info here, should be happening reeeeeeal soon

Around the blogroll because I have nothing else interesting at the moment and a lot of this stuff is great:
I should be back with a couple Michigan-centric posts within a day or so thanks to cards in the mail, plus hopefully I'll try to grab something from Meijer this weekend (I'm hoping to find some Absolute football racks or blasters or something), plus Georgia Mindset's group break is coming up, so look for posts about the results of that as well.  In the meantime, I'll be doing what I usually do this time of year:  following the NFL, college football and hockey, plus the Wings, and ignoring the boring-ass NBA.

Mail day streak continues...

More Blowout, more Wolverines:

While looking over a 2010 Topps football box break on BlowoutCards' forums last week I found a guy who was bemoaning the quality of one of his "hits"--a Steve Breaston Peak Performance jersey.  I asked if he had any help for my base wantlist, and as it turned out he had roughly half, so I went ahead and bought everything for a pretty reasonable price (that's been my experience with Blowout's forums in general, which is cool).  The payoff:
Not bad at all, for the small price I paid--and more importantly it's not a boring old white swatch.  Oddly enough it's only my third Breaston hit, and my first relic of him.  Others are in the PC.

On a related note, this now puts my 2010 Topps football base wantlist at the following:  32 57 75 85 97 101 110 139 142 147 251 351 360 362 395 403 423.  Please help if you can--I'd love to knock this baby out before the year is over.

That's not nearly enough for a daily post, so group break news #1:

I'm still drumming up interest for my potential (ie probably going to happen) 2007-2009 SAGE football break.  See this post for deets.

Group break news #2 (not me edition):

Group breaker extraordinaire Georgia Mindset is at it again with a new break featuring a case of 2010 Bowman Chrome.  His previous Topps Chrome/TTT break is the only one I've ever done but I was very pleased with the results and highly recommend AJ's breaks.  I'm keeping my dibs on the Tigers (and may be tag teaming with Beardy on the Orioles to hedge my bets against a huge Ripken pull this time) but many teams are still up for grabs, so get in!
