2016 trade package #4: My Tigers Obsession

Yep, I'm still here, even if I haven't posted in forever!  Today's card show may have been a bust--I literally didn't buy anything--but I still have plenty of things to send out to many of you soon.

So how about finally getting around to showing off some trade packages from the last few weeks?  First up is a very nice envelope from Jeff at My Sports Obsession.  My TMM co-writer (who posted earlier today, by the way, so head over there!) sent a bunch of Tigers my way, and here they are:
Miggy, Holaday and J.D. all hail from 2014 Topps Update, and I love the shot of Cabrera at the ASG.  Multiple World Series hero Jack Morris' entry is from 1979 Topps, making it his second-year card.  Fellow pitcher Anibal Sanchez gets in on the fun with his base from last year's Topps flagship; I hope he can contribute towards a turnaround of last season's disappointing record.  Finally, Jeff managed to send me an Alan Trammell I didn't have, this one from 1980 Topps, making it his third-year card, and the oldest one of him I own next to his RC from '78.

And now things get a bit oddball:
I'm wondering if Jeff or someone else can let me know what exactly the Kaline is--I'm no vintage expert, but I know many of you are.  Regardless, it's a very cool mini card of Mr. Tiger.  Going a bit more mainstream, former ace Max Scherzer reminds me of my good day at the casino today with this Topps Chipzzzzz chip.  Finally, Jeff tossed in a pocket schedule from the 1991 season.  I can't remember for sure, but I believe i went to at least one game that year.  Cover guy Cecil Fielder followed up on his 51-homer campaign the previous year with 44 more, and he left the yard 245 times in his six-plus years in Motown.  The '91 squad, which went 84-78, featured many of my favorite Tigers, including Mickey Tettleton, Lou Whitaker, Alan Trammell, and Tony Phillips.

The last Tiger in the package also happens to be a Michigan alum and therefore a guy I PC (and finished collecting in terms of his "regular stuff"):  Steve Boros.
This 1962 Post issue was a very nice surprise for me, especially since I hadn't even thought to see if Boros had any oddball-type stuff I might like.  Nice throw-in, Jeff!

Lastly, he included a trio of cards from two of my other PCs, including one card of a guy we both collect:
Maddux was an ageless star in the 90s and 2000s (and pretty good in the late 80s too!) and he makes two appearances here in his Braves uniform.  The first is a fun 90s insert from '96 Fleer called "Smoke 'n Heat," which is kind of funny because Mad Dog was more of a command guy than a flame-thrower.  Great looking card either way.  His other card is from the excellent '97 Upper Deck World Series subset, and this one honors his '96 Game 2 shutout of the Yanks, who of course eventually won in six.

Meanwhile, the Iron Man is a guy both of us collect so I have to thank Jeff for including this 2012 Topps Archives base of Ripken for me.  It's always nice to get more stuff of Cal!

Thanks a ton for a great envelope, Jeff, and I look forward to sending some fun stuff back to your new address very soon!

  1. The closest I can find on ebay for the Kaline is a 1963 Bazooka, albeit one far poorly cut/torn than the ones there.

    2. It is a Bazooka. The 63 and 64 sets are nearly impossible to differentiate

    3. Next time I'll just go straight to my vintage expert, Mark!

  2. Ditto Dougie that's definitely a severely trimmed Bazooka.

  3. I remember reading where you didn't have much vintage Tigers so when I run across them, I've been picking some up. The Boros and Kaline I had to grab when I saw them. You know I have a thing for vintage.

Oddly enough, the schedule was thrown in to protect cards I bought that were sent PWE.

Glad you enjoy, it's nothing compared to what you've sent me but it's a little bit back at you.
